John Wetton - ‘Raised In Captivity’

THE BAND:
John Wetton: vocals, bass guitar, acoustic guitar, keyboards
Billy Sherwood: all instruments, except where noted

TRACK FRAGMENTS:

1.) “Lost For Words” - (featuring Steve Morse of Deep Purple) - This track opens with two different rhythm guitar arrangements over the top a drum & bass line.  Since both guitar riffs sound like the were dome by the same person i am going to say that Steve double-tracked his self.  There are minor lead guitar licks connecting the musical intro with the musical pre-verse.  The musical pre-verse had a very simple feel to them.  There is a very short musical rest connecting the pre-verse with the musical verse.  There is a musical rest connecting the verse with the chorus this is where the actual musical change is.  There are a couple drum fills connecting the musical verse with the musical chorus.  The chorus has that classic Wetton with Asia hook.  There is a small keyboard effect connecting the first chorus with the second pre-verse.  Steve Morse double-tracked two different rhythm guitar arrangements to connect the second verse.  There is a small musical rest connecting the musical verse with the chorus.  After the second chorus there is a lead guitar solo.  There is no doubt that Steve Morse is playing guitar on this track.  There is a small keyboard effect connecting the the lead guitar solo with the third chorus.
2.) “Raised In Captivity” - (featuring Robert Fripp of King Crimson) - Just pure classic Asia!!!!
3.) “Goodbye Elsinore” - (featuring Steve Hackett of Genisis & GTR) - This track opens with a saxophone.  As the sax progresses john begins playing an acoustic guitar over the top of it.  There also is a quarter-note bass line.  When Wetton begins singing the vocal lines of the verse the song kind of takes a. ELP sound.  At the fifth lyric line there is an acoustic guitar change.  The band kicks-in at the chorus.  There was a minor lead guitar solo after the first lyric line.  Here was a backing harmony underneath the rest of the lead vocal lines.   After the second chorus there was a huge musical arrangement change that lead into the major lead guitar solo.  The lead guitar solo was very laid back and melodic sounding.  The chorus is several repeats of the chorus.
4.) “The Last Night Of My Life” - (featuring Alex Machacek of Jazz guitarist)- This track opened with a modern Jazz intro section.  When the band kicks-in the main body of the intro there are several lead guitar licks over the top of it.  The musical verse consisted of two different rhythm guitar arrangements.  The rhythm guitar of the pre-verse is the same one they used for the intro arrangement.  There is a small drum fill and musical change for the musical verse.  The musical chorus had a huge seventies YES feel to it.  After the first chorus there was a small breakdown that consisted of a very laid back guitar solo.  The second verse had echoes attached to the lyric lines.  There is a long interlude over the top of the coda.
5.) “We Stay Together” - (
bonus track) - One of the best tracks on the release I’m glad they added it!!
6.) “The Human Condition” - (featuring Tony Kaye of YES) - This track opens with a keyboard effect before going into an acoustic guitar arrangement.  There is a drum kick underneath it.  The musical verse consisted of the same rhythm with the addition of a distorted guitar.  Underneath the lyric lines the guys dropped the distorted guitar.  There is a huge drum fill connecting the verse with the musical chorus. There is a drum fill leading into the second chorus.  After the second chorus there is a cool yet abstract lead guitar solo section.  The rest of the song more or less repeats itself.
7.) “Steffi’s Ring” - (featuring Geoff Downesof Asia ) - just a simple pirate feeling song!!!
8.) “The Devil And The Opera House” - (featuring Eddie Jobson of Juthro Tull and Frank Zappa ) - This track opens with a simple keyboard riff that lasts maybe a whole-note.  There is a cymbal crash leading onto the first vocal line.  There is a very simple rhythm guitar arrangement underneath the lyric line.  After the second lyric line there is a drum fill that kicks the song-in.  The chorus had a very simple hook to it.  After the second chorus there is a violin solo.
9.) “New Star Rising” - (featuring Mick Box of Uriah Heep) - This is just a simple straightforward rock ‘n’ roll song!
10.) “Don’t Misunderstand Me”- (featuring Tony Kaye featuring Tony Kaye of YES) - This track opens with a keyboard arrangement over the top of a orchestration arrangement.  A drum fill connects the intro with the musical verse.  The musical verse is very reminiscent to the stuff they were doing before they split up.  The chorus had a very simple easy feel to it.  There is a backing harmony underneath the second verse.  After the second verse the song speeds up just a little.  All in all this was a great yet simple song!
11.) “Mighty Rivers” - (featuring Anneke Van Giersbergen former singer of The Gathering) - Though most people will not like this song I found it amazing!!!!!

Progressive rock master vocalist/bassist John Wetton returns with his sixth studio album titled, ‘Raised In Captivity’.  John had many guest on this release including Mick Box (Uriah Heep), Steve Hackett (Genesis), Steve Morse (Deep Purple) and many more.  Call it John’s unique voice or his song writing style however, every song on this release sounded like an Asia song.  If you are a fan of Asia or John Wetton than this CD is an absolute must have!
