Work of Art  - ‘In Progress’

THE BAND:
Lars Säfsund – vocals
Robert Sall – guitars, keyboards
Herman Furin – drums

TRACK FRAGMENTS:
1.) “The Rain” -This track opens with a keyboard arrangement over the top of a hi-hat time keeping rhythm.  The main body of the intro consisted of a full drum line, bass line, and rhythm guitar.  For the musical verse, the guys basically used the same keyboard arrangement with one difference.  That difference is for the musical verse the band cut the keyboard arrangement up in to several different sections with several rests in between letting the guitar, bass & drum bleed through.  The third lyric line of the verse had an echo attached to it.  The chorus had a simple rock hook attached to it.  Connecting the first chorus with the second verse there was a short repeat of the main intro. This lead into the lead guitar solo. After the solo there was a second breakdown section that consisted a lead vocal line over the top of it.
2.) “Nature Of The Game” - The keyboard of this intro was heavily reminiscent to seventies Dennis DeYoung and Styx.  After one measure, the bass line kicks-in.  There is a short drum fill connecting the musical intro with the musical verse.  Though the song kicks-in for the musical verse the keyboard stays the same.  There is a rhythm change for the musical chorus.  The lyrical arrangements of the chorus had a huge re-union Styx feel.  After the second chorus, there is a breakdown section where the band slows the (bpm) down.  There are several vocal lines over the top of the breakdown there is a lead guitar solo.
3.) “Once Again” - This intro opens with a tom-tom fill.  The main body of the intro consisted of a keyboard arrangement over the top of a rhythm guitar arrangement and bass and drum line.  The rhythm change of the and lyric arrangement was very reminiscent to early eighties John Waite.  All in all this track was fairy straight forward with a very simple feel.
4.) “Never Love Again” - There is a minor lead guitar solo over the top of this standard intro arrangement that reminds you of bands such as Reo Speedwagon, etc.  There is a small rhythm guitar and keyboard change for the musical pre-verse.  There is a huge vocal scream connecting the pre-verse with the verse.  The way they arranged the choruses gave then a Journey sound.  The solo though nothing flashy really worked for this song.
5.) “Eye Of The Storm” - The rhythm guitar that was over the top of this drum line of the intro had an echo attached to it.  After two measures, a keyboard arrangement kicks-in.  Not only is there a rhythm change for the musical verse however, there is a vocal echo connecting each lyric line of the first verse.  There is a very simple rhythm change for the musical verse. The chorus had a very simple rhythm change.  For me the keyboard solo was the best part of the song.
6.) “Until You Believe” - Just a great ballad!!!!
7.) “The Great Fall” - This track opens with two keyboard riffs.  There is a lead vocal line connecting the intro with the musical verse.  The musical verse had a very huge hook to it.  There was an arrangement change underneath the musical chorus.  The music arrangements on this track are cool as hell I wish they had extended them.  The solo for this song is by far one of the best!!!
8.) “Call On Me” - One of the best songs on the release!
9.) “Emelie”- I felt this song was very repeitive of the rest of the songs.
10.) “Fall Down” - This track was heavily influenced by john Waite.
11.) “Castaway” - This is the bands show case song!!!
12.) “One Step Away” - very reminiscent of the other tracks

Work of Art return with a much-anticipated follow-up to their 2008 debut titled ‘Artwork’.  Many times when a band releases an album with as much anticipation behind it such as this, the band will rush to get the release written & recorded.  Take a strike when the iron is hot mentality so to speak.  ‘In Progress’ took three almost four years to write and record with the result being one of the best AOR releases of the new millennium.  If you are a fan of AOR bands then this band and this release is for you.
