The term “Heavy Metal” was penned by the 60’s psychedelic rock band Steppenwolf on their 45-single titled “Born To Be Wild”. The actual lyric line goes; “I like smoke and lightning, heavy metal thunder, racin' with the wind...” which has absolutely nothing to do with music but riding motorcycles. Between 1967 and 1968 three bands, Vanilla Fudge (featuring future 80’s heavy metal iconic drummer Carmine Appice), Iron Butterfly and Blue Cheer released songs such as cover songs of “You Keep Me Hanging On” (Vanilla Fudge), “Summertime Blues” (Blue Cheer) and Iron Butterfly’s “In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida” (which was actually suppose to be titled “In The Garden Of Eden”) (Iron Butterfly).
Through the seventies bands like Black Sabbath, Rainbow and Judas Priest are all founding fathers of the eighties metal/hard rock sound there is no argument there. However, little credit is ever given to UFO and The Scorpions. Through the seventies it was bands like; T-Rex, Alice Cooper, Kiss and Sweet, that created the blueprint that most eighties Hollywood hard rock bands used. In fact, over the years I believe both Nikki Sixx (London, Mötley Crüe) and Lizzie Grey (London & Spiders & Snakes), have been the only two to admit this.
On March 11, 1983 Quiet Riot released their third album titled, ‘Metal Health’. Not only was this album Quiet Riot’s first release without guitarist Randy Rhoades however it was released just within a couple of day from being an exact year of his death. This had to be difficult to lead vocalist Kevin Dubrow (the only original member of QR) and had to put a lot of pressure on guitarist Carlos Cavazo. Bolstering two top #40 hits titled, “Cum On Feel The Noize” at # 5 and “Mental Health” at #31. ‘Metal Health’ was the first heavy metal album to hit #1 on the Billboard Music Charts knocking The Police’s – ‘Synchronicity’ out of the #1 position. Causing a American Heavy Metal signing with major record labels. Between the years of 1983-1984 bands like; Mötley Crüe, Iron Maiden. Dio, and Krokus either were signed to major labels or released an album. All of which are still together to this day! For the next ten years heavy metal and hard rock would control radio, MTV, and tour the biggest arenas in the world, with some bands shattering attendance records. The scene self imploded in the late 1992 some fans contribute this to the band Nirvana and the coming grunge scene however, let’s all be honest most of the third generation heavy metal bands brought the roof down on the genre. 60 % was due to self-indulgence with the record labels and 40 % was self-induced by the greater than now attitude of the bands.
Do not get me wrong this is a good documentary that is, up to a certain point. There are, in my opinion several what I feel are inconsistent facts. 1.) Outside of Lizzy Grey (London, Spiders & Snakes), Stephen Pearcy (Ratt) and Ron Keel (Keel), which we will get to in a second, are the only three bands that started the Hollywood scene on this DVD. As for Keel I remember them more of an early eighties band than late eighties band as mentioned on the DVD. 2.) Most of the musicians featured in this DVD are actually from third generation hard rock bands bands and really had nothing to do with the actual creation of the scene itself. Yes, Great White’s first album was released in ’84 however the band did not really make it until ’87 when ‘Once Bitten’ was released. And just off the top of my head I can think of several albums that had more to do with the creation of the scene then Great White’s first release. Mötley Crüe’s – ‘Shout At The Devil’, Aldo Nova – ‘self-titled’ plus a slew of NWBHM (new wave British heavy metal) bands such as these is who done the construction work while bands like; Warrant, Cinderella, L.A. Guns and finally Guns ‘n’ Roses were suppose to lay the blacktop. Here is my main problem with the disc about halfway through the feature it turns into a small biography on GnR. I want to apologize to, Slash, Izzy, Duff, Steven before I say this but though Axl was one of the greatest vocalists to come from the hard rock/heavy metal genre. He also was one of the biggest reasons for its implosion in 1992-1993.
With everything that has been said I know it sounds like I’m putting the DVD down, and in some ways I guess I am.  But it is still a great piece of history and is well worth viewing especially for the younger fans.  With that being said you would be beter off renting this one instead of buying it.
