Pasha Records release of Quiet Riot’s ‘Metal Health’ that
included the hit single, “Cum On Feel The Noise” in 1983 caused a heavy metal
explosion. By the time 1989 rolled around there was just three requirements
that were going to get you signed to a major record contract; you had to be in a
band, you had to have a hard rock look, and most important a blond lead singer,
being able to write songs or play music was optional. By no means am I saying
that every band was not deserving of a record contract. In fact, it is just the
opposite, my opinion is every band is deserving of a record contract. The
problem is, there is not enough money to properly promote everyone so they try
to predict the buying market. Sometimes they’re right, but most the time
they’re wrong. Cause in point, Babylon A.D.
'In The Beginning...' is a collection of twelve demo songs
that landed Babylon A.D. their major recording contract with Arista Records back
in 1988. You can definably hear that the rhythm tracks (drums & bass)
on a couple of the songs were recorded using a less expensive recording studio.
Which is pretty much what I expected, but what I was blindsided by was how
smooth Derek's vocals were. This shows me that it does not matter how much
money the band spends on recording a CD, Derek can and does sing his ass off.
If you look at the songs for what they are, demos that was recorded in the
eighties then any one of the twelve the band could have used for their first two
releases. With that being said it is no damn wonder the band was signed to
a major recording contract. 'In the Beginning...' is not only a absolute
must have for all die-hard Babylon A.D. fans, but also for eighties heavy metal
music collectors.
