TRACK FRAGMENTS:

.) “Secret Romeo” – The intro to this track is very similar to the intro Lillian Axe wrote for the song “She Likes It On Top” from their freshman ‘Self-Titled’ CD released in 1988.  About the only difference is the key and speed.  The guys used the same rhythm guitar riff for the musical verse as the intro.  The third lyric line of the verse had a backing vocal attached to it.  This backing harmony gave the verse a very melodic sound.  The musical rhythm really does not change until the pre-chorus.  The backing harmonies of the chorus of this song gave the song a very huge hook.  The way the lyrical arrangements of this song sound was very reminiscent o0f White Lion.  Now that is not saying Raym sounds line Mike Tramp.  As a songwriter I can’t help but say I really got off on the backing vocals of this track!
.) “I Don’t Wanna Lie” – This track opens with a very simple acoustic rhythm guitar arrangement.  The lyric lines open with the chorus.  After the opening chorus the band kicks the song-in.  In many ways the opening chorus is part of the intro section.  There is a rhythm guitar change for the musical verse.  This musical change was a lot mellower than the opening electric guitar riff.  There are several backing harmonies attached to the lyric lines of the verse.  For the musical chorus the band speeds the arrangement up.  This in conjunction with the vocal lines gives the song a very huge melodic hook.  There is a small drum fill connecting the second chorus with the lead solo section.  Much like every hard rock song wrote in the eighties the lead guitar solo was very laid back and melodic.  There is a breakdown section after the lead solo section.  For this breakdown section Ken switches from a standard drum rhythm to a rhythm played on his tom-toms.
.) “She’s Only Young” –This track opens with a very simple hard rock intro arrangement.  There is a small rhythm guitar change for the musical verse.  The backing vocals of the pre-chorus are golden!  Instead of changing the rhythm guitar for the chorus the band changed the vocal arrangement.  This was kind of a unique way of writing a song.  The lead guitar solo is after the second chorus and was one of the best solo I’ve ever heard from a freshman release.
.) “So Far Away” – This song opens with a bass line.  About one measure into the intro a small rhythm guitar rhythm guitar riff kicks-in.  Then one measure after that a lead guitar riff kicks-in.  Instead of changing the guitar riff for the musical verse they change the guitar effect instead.  The musical verse consisted of two different rhythm guitar arrangements.  There is a vocal accent connecting the verse and chorus.  This vocal accent allows Raym to show off his vocal ability.  As the song progresses the hook gets bigger.  This is a very well written for what was such a young band!
.)”Is It Ever Easy” –The guitar of this intro consisted of a clean guitar effect.  Over the top of the main intro section there is a minor lead guitar solo.  The drum pattern of the song gave the song a disco sound.  The last couple of notes of the lead guitar solo run underneath the opening lyric line of the first verse.  There is a drop in the speed of the music for the musical chorus.  I must say I was a little taken aback by this arrangement in comparison to the rest of CD.  With that being said it shows that there was or is more to Charlemagne that just a hair band.
.) “I’ve Got You” – This track opens with a very simple intro arrangement.  The guys used the same musical arrangement for the verse as the intro.  In many was this song reminded me of the solo make-up albums Kiss release.  This is especially on the choruses.  This song much like the first one is just very simple and straight forward.  There is a acoustic guitar solo which I thought was very cool.  In many ways the more the song progresses the mare it reminded me of “Shandi” from the Kiss ‘Unmasked’ album.
.) “Chance Is Calling” –This track opens with a fairly straight forward intro section.  Scott double tracked his minor lead guitar solo to give it a twin guitar effect.  The hi-hat pattern of the musical verse gave the song a small disco twist.  Several of the lyric lines of the verse had backing vocals attached to them.  If I had to say I would say the chorus reminded more of Nelson stuff than anyone. The tom-tom sound on this song was huge sounding!!!!  The lead vocal overdubs of the outro section really showed Raym vocal strength.
.) “Last Chance” –Instrumental
.) “Wait And See” –This ballad opened with an acoustic guitar arrangement.  The bass line kicks-in at the musical chorus.  The drum line does not kick-in until the second verse.  There is a small backing vocal harmony underneath the second verse.  I expected a little more of a dramatic lead guitar solo.
.) “I’m Not That Easy” – There is a small drum fill that opens this track.  The thing that stood out to me during the intro was the bass line.  There is a small rhythm guitar change for the musical verse.  Let’s face it the highlight of this song is the bass line.  Once you hear it that’s all you hear!
.) “I Wish I Knew” – All in all the guys wrote a very simple straight forward hard rock song.

Originally released in 1994 Charlemagne’s self-titled release had three major things against it.  First it fell in a time when heavy metal and hard rock were definitely on the downslide.  The only hard rock band that released a CD that year outside of great hits packages that was worth talking about was, Black Sabbath, Motley Crue, Tesla, and their releases really wasn’t nothing to brag about.  The secondly it was release just to a test area around the Chicago area.  The third and last thing was it was released about ten years overdue.  If this third thing had of happen there is no doubt in my mind that Charlemagne’s name would have been spoken up there with the likes of Poison, Warrant, and some of the other hair metal greats.  If you are into eighties heavy metal this CD is an absolute must have!!!!
