In 1978, the southern rock band Black
Oak Arkansas set up an audition for a fifteen year old Memphis prodigy by the
name of Shawn Layne. By late 1978 Shawn was playing guitar in Black Oak
Arkansas. After performing several shows 1979 Black Oak Arkansas lead singer
Jim 'Dandy' Mangrum made the decision to diband the group become a
evangelist. After Black Oak Arkansas disbanded Shawn along with former Black Oak
Arkansas bassist Andy Tanas formed the band 'The Streets'. 'The Streets'
fell through rather quickly after turning down a record deal with Pasha Records.
Jim Dandy, Shawn, Chris along with new members Kinley Wolfe and Billy Batte
reformed Black Oak Arkansas but by 1982 the band had lost it's rowdy southern
rock edge and once again called it quits. All though several demo's
where recorded during the period Shawn was with the band a studio album never
materialized.
While most teenage kids where graduating high school.
Shawn was graduating from the life of a rock star. After Shawn's
graduation he was pretty burnt out from touring and would not resurface until
1983. In 1983 with a new prospective about playing Shawn began to perform
with several local bands around Memphis.
Jim Varney would be the first one to capture Shawn's playing
ability in the studio. The 4th volume of Shrapnel's 'U.S. Metal' in 1985
features a guitar solo by Shawn called, "Statosphere II". During
the late eighties and through the nineties Shawn did studio work for artist
like; Jim Jamison (Survivor), Joe Walsh, Sam and Dave, just to name a
few, he was even invited to join Alice Copper for a tour but declined. In
1987 Shawn would do guitar work for Ringo Starr on an album that would never be
released.
In 2001 Shawn parted ways with his business associate Les
Birtchfield, abandoning Eye Records, and shut down his official website.
Eye Reckon Records was given no choice in the matter but to shelve
several planned releases by Shawn. It was during this period Shawn was
hospitalized suffering from serious health problems. Shawn made a quick
recovery and started gigging around Memphis with a local bar band the 'Time
Bandits'. Even though Shawn was just making cigarette money he was once
again doing what he enjoyed.
By 2002 things really began to pick up for Shawn. With
his hospitalization just a memory he re-united with Jeff Stipe for several club
tours in the Southeastern U.S. and Europe the set list for those dates consisted
of songs from their heyday and Eastern rags.
February 2003 Shawn's long awaited dream would come true.
Shawn, Hellborg, along with drummer Andrea Marchesini, traveled to the Indian
subcontinent for a short tour. The trio where hailed has true rock stars.
In early September 2003 while preparing for a new album with Hellborg and Ginger
Baker, Shawn developed severe breathing problems and underwent various medical
test. Even though Shawn was to stay on oxygen for the remainder of his
life, he sadly passed away on Friday the 26th of the same month as being
diagnosed.
In 2004 artist from Lion Music came together to pay their
respects to not only a great musician but also a brother. In the only way
they know how, with music. "Shawn Lane VOL. I" consist of fifteen
tracks written by fifteen artist. The CD is an expression of what
Shan meant to each individual artist. As I listen to the tracks I am sure
there is a song on this CD will help ease the sorrow felt for all Shawn Lane
fans world wide.
